12月16日 Xabi Alonso - December 16th 2005On the face of it, Spain have been handed a relatively easy draw but you have to respect everyone. For Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Ukraine to even be at the World Cup they have to have earned it, although we're optimistic and we're certainly not complaining about the draw.
We know a lot about the Ukraine because we played them in qualification for the last European Championships. They're a strong team who are very impressive physically - and of course they have Andriy Schevchenko up front, who's a fantastic player. To be perfectly honest, I know very little about Saudi Arabia and Tunisia but as the tournament gets closer we'll be watching plenty of videos and by the time the World Cup comes round we'll know all about them - our fans can rest assured of that.
Although the group looks good, things could get complicated after that. If we finish runners up then there's a good chance of us getting France in the next round, and if we win our group we would be on target for Brazil in the quarterfinals. Then again, people always talk about all the permutations and then there's a surprise that makes all the analysis and debate completely pointless, so let's see what happens. Personally, I'd like to play England: I've got lots of English mates, I know their players and their style of play. Whoever we get, we're confident. |
